New Calling!

Last Wednesday, we had a high counselor in our stake drop by to visit and give Kenny a new calling. (We were kind of thrown with it being a high counselor, but I guess every ward and stake delegates differently.) Kenny will now be serving as first counselor in the Elders Quorum in our ward. This is new and different for us. Kenny has been serving in the YM/Scouts for most of our marriage. He has hardly ever been able to go to Elders' Quorum. They didn't release him from scouts yet, because his replacement has to get trained first, so he will be doing double duty for a couple weeks. I'm excited he won't have any more camp outs or scout meetings to go to after that. Tyler was a little disappointed to loose Kenny as his leader, but Tyler will be 12 in October and moving into Young Men's soon anyway. We don't really know the other Elders he'll be serving with but it looks like for the first time Kenny is the oldest of the group. Aaron Walker is the President, Bob Eardley is the second counselor, and Chase Thompson is the secretary. The Walker's, Eardley's and Thompson's each only have one son. They all seem like great people and we are glad to get to know more people in our ward.

New Teachers

At our kids school they group kids in 'learning levels.' Within each grade there are different levels where each teacher teaches a different range based on how the kids are progressing. The entire class is in the same range so the teacher can take as much or little time needed to cover a concept before moving on. It helps each child learn at the level they are most comfortable at, without moving too fast or too slow or needing to change grade levels.

Sometimes (especially at the beginning of the year) they will move kids up or down a level, depending on the pace and curriculum of a certain class. Some parents get very competitive about what level their child is in, so it is not discussed by the staff. I don't care if they are in the top level or not, I just want them to be in the right place for THEM so they can get the most benefit. When Tyler first started at Noah Webster in first grade, he took a placement test (which he did terrible on, because the kid next to him kept talking out loud, making him second guess his own answers) and they placed him in a class. Within the first few days of school his teacher called and said they needed to move him up a few levels because his reading was more advanced. So he went to a new class the next day. The new teacher called me that night and said he needed to move down one level because although his reading was advanced, his math wasn't yet. So moving him down a level would allow him to learn the math, but also maintain his reading level. Within one week he had 3 teachers and was pretty confused, but it ended up being the perfect place for him. He hasn't been moved again since, and neither had Ryan, so I figured they were right where they should be and didn't think about the 'learning levels' again. Until this year...

About a week into school, I got a call from McKay's teacher, Ms. DeMarco, saying they wanted to move Mckay up a level. She said he was completing his work quickly, following directions, and could move at a quicker pace than she would be teaching in her class. I knew Mckay was ready for school and could handle something more challenging, but I loved his teacher and was sad to see her go. I took him to school the next day to meet his new teacher, Mrs. Gibson. She was super nice and there were other kids moving from his old class, which made the transition easier. No problem. Once he was settled, I left to run my errands for the day.

A few hours later, I got a call from Ryan's teacher, Mrs. Stull, saying they wanted to move Ryan up a level as well. I was a little more concerned this time. We really struggled with Ryan's ADHD last year. It was such a fight to get his homework done and keep him focused. He changed medications several times, and I wasn't convinced it was making enough of a difference... until I took him off for the summer, and started him back on them right before school started. It was AMAZING!! He was so focused and obedient. He cleaned his entire (MESSY) room by himself. He told me several times he had "an URGE to clean." He could sit and read for hours! At school, I had prepped Mrs Stull that he would need help, but she said she had NEVER had a problem with his attention yet. At home, he started right on his homework as soon as he walked in the door. He was already half way through the 2nd Harry Potter book - after only one week reading it. It was like he was a robot - but in a good way. BUT I am afraid of it wearing off, or weakening. What happens if we move him up and later he can't focus any more and gets overwhelmed. I can't handle a year like last year again! After voicing my concerns with Mrs. Stull, which she agreed with, she assured me that most of her current class struggled with math last year and they would essentially be repeating most of the math book Ryan used last year. Ryan didn't need that and was ready to move on. The reading would be near the same level in both classes. That helped me. I knew Ryan had never struggled with new concepts, just the pace of class when he was distracted and unfocused. Mrs. Stull suggested that he may get bored if he were to stay, and that would cause problems focusing as well. I agreed and felt it was best for him to move up, although again, I loved his teacher and was sad to see her go. She told me he would finish the week in her class and start his new class on Monday. So, I went to meet his new teacher, Mrs. Robinson, on Friday. She was very nice and Ryan already knew many of his new classmates from last year.

In the end, I think the transitions were more difficult for me than for the kids... getting everyone settled and routines re-established. I know they are where they should be.

1st Day of School!

The kids started school on Wednesday! This is the only time I will EVER have 3 of them all at the same school. Tyler is starting 6th grade with Mrs. Silvas, who he had last year and looped up with his class. She is a great teacher so we were all excited about that. Ryan is starting 4th grade with Mrs. Stull, who seems nice but firm - perfect for Ryan. Mckay finally got to start Kindergarten with Mrs. DeMarco. He is almost six, so he has been waiting so long to go to school and is SO ready! Everyone is excited about thier teachers and it looks like it will be a great year! Brayden is almost 3 so he will be staying home with Mom this year (next year will be pre-school) and is thrilled to have full reign of the house. I have big plans to potty-train Brayden, clean carpets, and de-junk my house. :)

Utah - Logan Style

Lisa and Gary chose to be sealed in the Salt Lake Temple at the end of July and invited the famiy to join them if possible. We thought it would be great to support them, Danny and Gwen, and take a vacation at the same time. Kenny took the last week of July off and away we went for 9 days in Utah. We spent most of the trip in Logan with Danny and Gwen. They have several spare bedrooms and were kind enough to let all 6 of us take over their house for the week.

Saturday - We drove all day July 24th, and after 13 hours in the car we arrived at 9 pm and it was just barely getting dark, thanks to daylight savings. It was a long day!

Sunday - We went to church, played games, including several versions of settlers, and watched the Mad Men season premier (I couldn't wait until we got home to watch it).

Monday - We went to Bear Lake, but no pics since I thought I left my camera in the car, only to discover it was in my bag the entire time. On our way there Danny showed us the Crockett House. The Crockett family were founding father's of Logan, related to our Crockett relatives that settled in Eastern AZ. The guy that owns it now has an amazing flower garden, designed to look like a space shuttle blasting off. Later that day we played more games, and went to Costa Vita for dinner with Danny and Gwen while Tyler babysat.

Tuesday - We drove down to Provo to eat lunch at Brick Oven (YUM!), go to the Bean Museam, Dinosaur Museum, and the BYU bookstore (this has become a tradition on our trips to Utah, and the boys still wanted to go). Then we drove up Provo Canyon and hiked from Canyon Glen to Bridal Vail Falls. Before heading back up to Logan, we drove by my old house in Lindon (my family moved here just as I was born and moved to Orem when I was 7) then stopped at Purple Turtle for ice cream for the drive.

Wednesday - We checked out all the Logan sites. First we went to the Logan Temple, then USU, the cheese factory and Firehouse for lunch. Later that day we went to the small Zoo and park next door to meet with my friend Jenny and her cute family. They have 4 girls and we have 4 boys. Jenny and I went to high school together before I moved to AZ. We hadn't seen each other for 15 years! It was so fun to reconnect!

Thursday - We all drove down to Lagoon for the day. I hadn't been since 9th grade, and Kenny hadn't been sice he was a priest in YM. A lot had changed! Since we are total Disneyland pros, it was strange not to know where we were going and what rides to go on. But it was also fun not to already know the rides and have everything be unexpected. The best thing was cooling off at the new water park, Lagoon-a-Beach, midway through the day when we were hot and tired. It was nice to cool-of and rest in the lazy river for a while. Disneyland needs a water park! I'm sure as the boys get older, we will be coming back to Lagoon on our trips to Utah.

Friday - We drove down to Salt Lake to see all the church sites. Danny had to go in to work and Gwen stayed home for a nap (and break from us, I'm sure) First we went to the Joseph Smith Memorial building and ate lunch then went to see the movie about Joseph's life. I know the boys learned something, because they ahve talked aobut it since. Next we went to the Beehive House for a tour. I was able to show the boys where my dad dropped a screwdriver through a light fixture while restoring the building before his mission. It's still there! Then we went to temple square to see the Christus statue and visitors center briefly. Last we went to the church history museum where they had a children;s exibit that was interactive for the kids so we spend most of our time there. After driving home, we left the boys with Tyler (watching a movie) and went to Smokin' Blues BBQ with Dan and Gwen. So Yummy!

Brayden thought this stand in the children's exhibit was for conducting music.
He was cracking us all up!

Saturday - We planned to stay with Wes and Linda in Spanish Fork that night to cut a few hours off our drive the next day. So, we packed up all our stuff and said goodbye to Dan and Gwen. Then drove down to Salt Lake for Lisa and Gary's sealing in the Salt Lake Temple. The temple was super busy, so the sealing ended up being almost an hour later than planned. Thank goodness Wes helped keep an eye on our boys, and even got to change a stinky diaper! Afterward we walked over to the Lion house for the luncheon and pictures. Before leaving, we stopped at the conference center or a quick tour (which we had done before, but the boys seemed interested so we did it again). On the drive down to Spanish Fork we passed by my Orem house (where I lived before moving to AZ when I was 16). By the time we got to Wes', we were all exhausted, so he turned on a movie and made popcorn and let us chill. We were sad we didn't get to spend more time with them, but it was good to see them and chat for a while.

Sunday - Wes and Linda made us Tigger and Pooh waffles with cream cheese and strawberry freezer jam (MMM!) for breakfast before our drive home. We made pretty good time and pulled in around 8 pm.
It was a different trip than our usual Utah trip, but so much fun! I know we will have to incorporate some of the new things in our Utah trips in the future!
